What they said
Here some thoughts from our finalists and guests at The FoodTalk Awards 2017
Finalists
“The recognition we received as a Food Talk award finalist and gold award winner helped us demonstrate credibility for our solution in the industry and the excitement that followed after being announced as winners also had a very positive impact internally on our team.”
Ritam Gandhi, Founder, Studio Graphene
“Winning the FoodTalk Award means the world to us. It's fantastic to know that others believe in what you're doing just as much as you do.
And to win the Winner of Winners taste award for our beer on the night was the cherry on the cake. Products like ours that do good must taste good too.
The awards night was great - it was fun to try new food and drinks and to chat and cheer with all the other producers looking to make a difference. We can't wait until next year - cheers!”
Julie Prebble, Toast Ale
“The awards evening at Oxo Tower was great fun: an enjoyable time tasting the other products and voting for our favourites. We met some lovely finalists and have forged new bonds with people we might work with in the future.
One downside … most people we spoke to thought the talk went on too long. It was interesting, but many people were checking their phones and chatting before she’d finished. Perhaps a shorter presentation would be more appropriate for that type of event.
That said, it was very well organised and we all had a great time.”
Davina Steel, Manna Vida
When you start trading as a business (and we've only been trading as a startup for 6 months) an awards ceremony like the Food Talk awards helps to celebrate the years of development leading up to that point. To be recognised as a Silver Winner helps to make those days of persistence feel all the more worth it. Thank you for the opportunity and recognition.
Dan Featherstone, Founder, Made For Drink
"Our aim at The Foraging Fox was to go back to basics and to produce a range of ketchups which are made with all natural, simple, good quality ingredients which just taste great.
So for our Hot Beetroot Ketchup to be awarded Gold in the Clean Eating Category at the inaugural FoodTalk Awards means so much to us as it feels like recognition by those who share our values."
Frankie Fox, Co-Founder, The Foraging Fox
" The Food Talk Awards was great to see and meet other fellow brands. We are so excited to be a finalist as a new and upcoming brand we are pushing the boundaries on brewing drinks with quality ingredients in a future format. The Silver awards has given an excellent platform to showcase our Sticksology brand and its wonderful experince - Sip, Stir & Savour"
Ricky Kothari, T-Sticks of London
“We really appreciate how the FoodTalk Awards were looking at truly unique products. This is so important to our business, as we pride ourselves on making something different from the rest, and it’s very rarely acknowledged in this way.
I’d also like to add a side note, that I really enjoyed the whole atmosphere are the awards, and how accessible they felt. A lot of awards are completely overpriced and impossible for the small producers to enter regularly. I also really enjoyed the talk about the history of food, very rare to have such an enjoyable night at these things!”
Grace Simpson, Brand Manager, Goupie
“Winning the “It’s All In The Taste” FoodTalk award for 2017 has meant a lot to Fifth Dimension Chocolates. This award celebrates not just great flavours in our chocolates but the innovative ideas we have put into our chocolates, Bringing new and exciting flavours together within chocolate giving people a whole new taste experience.
We really enjoyed being part of this competition and meeting other finalists – the award ceremony was exciting and a great way to bring everyone together in a friendly environment.”
Russell Pullan, Fifth Dimension Chocolates
“The FoodTalk Awards was an awards event like no other. The well-chosen venue, menu, short-listed food finalists and important industry guests made for a really enjoyable, informative and entertaining evening. It was a proper showcase for the true innovators and producers of emerging brands at the cutting edge of foodtech. Fudge Kitchen felt very honoured to have been a finalist and to have had the opportunity to be part of the whole event.”
Sian Holt, MD, Fudge Kitchen
“The Food Innovation Awards were such a breath of fresh air, recognising true innovation. We were honoured to be shortlisted amongst such inspiring businesses... and the dinner menu wasn't too bad either!”
Melanie Goldsmith, Co-Founder, Smith & Sinclair
“Small but perfectly formed, this is an event where you really feel you’re amongst the stars of tomorrow. There are food and drinks brands here with fresh ideas, and the energy and passion needed for success.
The organisers are bringing something new and very quirky to the foodscape in the UK and the event is great fun. Voting on the night was a great feature. Thank you to all involved.”
Paul Crowley, Marketing Development Manager, Winterhalter Ltd
“We were both delighted and honoured to discover that Boozy Udders had taken the top spot at the FoodTalk Awards. It was a brilliant night and what made it so rewarding was that we were exhibiting alongside some really fantastic brands, thus to win the Big Apple Award was humbling and a great thrill. We met some incredibly influential people within the world of food and drink, and to receive their thumbs-up was a massive confidence booster.
It has certainly given us something to talk about to our customers but also to potential investors. Boozy Udders is at an exciting time in its two-year history and in order to take us to the next level (which we think winning this award will assist in greatly), we hope to secure investment in the near future to take The Udders to infinity and beyond! We hope that winning the FoodTalk Awards will help to put us firmly on the foodie map and take us to an exciting new level in the world of luxury ice cream and puddings.
Sarah Ward, Chief Udder, Boozy Udders
“We had a great time at the event – tasted some great food and got to connect to some amazing like-minded brands who definitely deserved the gold award!
As a little critique for the future: we think the event was a little too late in the day, with the main course being served at 10pm (at which point we were absolutely starving for something to eat) and considering that it took place on a Monday. But other than that we had a brilliant time!”
Romy Callwitz, Mr Organic
“Winning a Gold award for the Drinks Taste category for our Golden Milk spice blend is a great testament to the premium quality and great taste we hold ourselves to as well as being proving our “not all spices are created equal” motto positive. It’s also an accolade that we know will increase brand credibility and awareness to both consumers and trade, both of which are important objectives for start ups like ourselves. The application process, communications and awards gala evening were really well coordinated and the People’s choice awards made for a great interactive way to get others in the food industry to try our products.”

“The Food Talk Awards are a great contribution to the future of food culture in Britain. I met some excellent companies who are using new technology to really challenge our ideas of what food is and what it can be; Toast Ale, for example is using leftover bread to make beer which will encourage its consumers to think about waste in a new and exciting way.
The people that Food Talk have attracted to the awards are leading thinkers and doers in the future of food too - Ali Morrow from Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and Carolyn Steel are both pushing new boundaries in the way we think about food, and it was great to talk to them over dinner. I recorded Carolyn for the delicious podcast about the evening, and she explains why she thinks that the Food Talk Awards are so important.”
